Uprising in Assam against Kakopathar incident Guwahati | February 16, 2006 1:41:52 PM IST
Protest against February 10 killings of at least nine unarmed protestors in police and CRPF firing at Kakopathar in Upper Assam have spilled over to rest of the state much to the discomfort of the Congress government.Besides the opposition political parties led by the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), different NGOs and human rights organisations have orchestrated public uprising all over the state against Kakopathar killings and demanded withdrawal of army from the state to give the nascent peace process with the banned ULFA a chance to find a lasting solution. There have been more brickbats and few bouquets for the four ministers deputed by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to tackle the situation in Upper Assam areas in the aftermath of Kakopathar carnage. Some of families of victims of Kakopathar police firing, who were protesting death of one Ajit Mahanta in army custody, reportedly cold shouldered the chief minister's emissaries by rejecting the compensation offer from the government. Mr Gogoi has been put on the dock by the opposition for his failure to call on families of Kakopathar victims till date. The People's Committee for Peace Initiative in Assam yesterday brought out a public rally in Tinsukia protesting Kakopathar killings and human rights violations in the state by security forces. Several social organisations in the state under the leadership of human rights watch group, Manab Adhikar Sangram Samity (MASS) have decided to raise in an international forum the rampant human rights violation in the state by security forces. The decision was taken in a citizens' meeting held in the city under the aegis of the MASS. Meanwhile, with the smell of polls in the air, the Opposition political parties in the State are out to make Kakopathar a major issue against the ruling Congress. UNI XC BA SKM1238
